A very strong storm system is expected to move into our region by the end of the work week with impacts into the weekend.

This storm is forecast to push precipitation into the northern plains by around Friday, but with warm air ahead of the system, rain and thunderstorms are expected first. Snow amounts with this system will be tricky to forecast because of how soon the precipitation will change over to snow, where the storm system will be set up, and how quickly the storm will move out of the region.
As you can see below, the forecast weather models do not have a grip on the snowfall forecast through Saturday evening. The GFS model is showing heavy snows across the northeast, whereas the ECMWF is scaling back the amount of snow for the northeast. The GEM model is having much of the region with little or no snow accumulations.

One thing is for certain about this system, the winds will be strong. Weather models show gusts over 40 to 50mph at times, with the GFS model suggesting gusts over 60mph.

There is a lot of time from now to then, so please keep checking back for additional forecasts and information on this system.
