Anniversary of Sioux Falls' Triple Twisters

In 2019, the city of Sioux Falls was impacted by three tornadoes on September 10th. A line of severe thunderstorms moved across the region, bringing straight-line winds up to 100mph and three quick spin-ups of tornadoes.



Three brief EF-2 tornadoes were confirmed within the city's limits causing damage to include Avera Health Complex, businesses near Kiwanis and Western Avenue and homes in southern Sioux Falls.



According to the National Weather Service, the tornadoes near Western Mall and in the residential areas near 69th Street had estimated peak wind speeds of 125mph.




The strongest tornado, with estimated peak wind speeds of 130mph, was located in southwest Sioux Falls and impacted the Avera Heart Hospital. Eight people were injured in this tornado, with no deaths reported.
