The lovely stretch of mild weather is expected to end at the start of the work week as a clipper system will push into the region. This will bring wintry weather and brisk northwest winds, pushing colder temperatures back into South Dakota.
Starting later tonight, expect precipitation to move into the region with mainly light rain or light freezing rain for central and eastern South Dakota and rain changing to snow in the far west.
As we move into Monday morning, the precipitation is expected to become more widespread, with snow in the west and rain or freezing rain across central and eastern parts of the state. The rain/freezing rain will then change over to snow by mid-morning for parts of central South Dakota.
By Monday afternoon, snow for the west and central, with a mixture of rain or snow for the east.
By Monday evening, the precipitation is forecast to continue its track towards the southeast and exit the state.
The heaviest snowfall will be over the northern Black Hills, where Winter Storm Warnings will be in effect on Monday. Then, generally, an area of one to three inches of snow from the northwest down towards southeast South Dakota, with a few pockets of higher amounts of up to five inches. Some minor ice accumulations are possible, mainly from the north-central and into the east-central regions of the state.
