Fatal Crash in Deuel County

Icy roads in northeast, South Dakota claim one life in a vehicle crash on Valentine's Day.





From the South Dakota Department of Public Safety...


A 68-year-old Toronto, SD woman died Wednesday afternoon in a two-vehicle crash in Deuel County.


The names of the people involved have not been released pending notification of family members.


Preliminary crash information indicates the driver of a 2012 Chevrolet Impala was traveling south on State Highway 15, lost control on icy roads, and slid across the center line directly in front of a 2016 Peterbilt Semi. The front of the semi struck the passenger side of the Impala. Both vehicles went off the roadway into the west ditch. The driver of the Impala was pronounced deceased on the scene. There were no passengers in the vehicle. The driver of the Peterbilt had no injuries. Seatbelt use is under investigation for both drivers.


The South Dakota Highway Patrol is investigating the crash. All information released so far is only preliminary.


The Highway Patrol is an agency of the South Dakota Department of Public Safety.




The Deuel County Sheriff's Office, Toronto Fire Department, Brandt Fire Department, and South Dakota Highway Patrol were all on the scene.
