Fire Crews Battle Grassland Fire in the Southwest

Updated: Oct 22

On Wednesday around 10:30pm, the Sharps Corner Volunteer Fire Department was called to a grassland fire just north of Manderson in southwest South Dakota.

The fire quickly spread, fueled by the area's high winds and dry conditions. Additional fire agencies from the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) Wildland Fire, Kyle Volunteer Fire Department, Martin Volunteer Fire Department, Edgemont Volunteer Fire Department, and the Oglala Sioux Tribe (OST) Emergency Management entered the battle to contain the blaze.

The fire was successfully contained and extinguished by fire crews on the scene overnight.

This collective effort underscores the dedication and bravery of our local fire crews. Their ability to work together under hazardous conditions prevented further spread and potential damage to nearby properties and land.
We would like to extend our sincere gratitude to all the departments involved in this emergency response and commend the tireless work of the firefighters on the ground. Their quick action ensured the safety of the community, and we are fortunate to have such skilled and dedicated personnel protecting our lands. If there are any other individuals or departments who assisted in this response that we have not mentioned, we sincerely apologize and greatly appreciate your support.
