A storm system is expected to start pushing up snow to our regions later tonight and continue through Monday. The National Weather Service has issued Winter Storm Warnings and Winter Weather Advisories for south-central, southeast, and northeast regions of South Dakota.
Tonight, light snow is expected to develop over the west and southern regions of South Dakota. This snow will spread northward into east-central and northeast, South Dakota by Monday morning. Light snow chances will come to an end across the west by the morning hours and the east will continue to see snow falling.
By Monday evening, the snow will be confined to the southeast and parts of east-central and northeast, South Dakota. The heaviest snowfall rates will be across the southeast where Winter Storm Warnings are in effect. By Tuesday, the snow will come to an end during the morning hours.
Weather models are agreeing that snowfall amounts will be the highest in the far southeast where 6 to 12 inches of accumulations are expected with some local higher amounts. In Brookings and back towards Mitchell, amounts of 4 to 8 inches are possible. Amounts up towards the north and west will be lighter with some locations under one inch.
